Peep Show: Review by Terence Dick

"I scooted through Peep Show, Lonsdale Gallery’s exhibition of up-and-coming artists, a two-floor extravaganza with Alex McLeod being the only name familiar to me. Either he’s refining his technique or I’m getting used to it, but these virtual landscapes, created “in computer”, approach the combination of representation and spatial disorientation that makes Neo Rauch such a wealthy man. McLeod’s nowhere near that dense yet, but he’s heading in a direction; let’s hope it’s the right one. Besides him, Bogdan Luca shares some easy-on-the-eyes wide-brushed impressionistic work inspired by blurry photographs. Each one looks like it could be part of a larger canvas, so they, in a weird way, leave me wanting more. Amanda McCavour’s thread-drawn birds would look perfect on my daughter’s walls and are so much finer when released from their glass cages. Osheen Harruthoonyan’s photographs are murky and textured. They’re a bit too murky for me, but intrigue when they emerge from the darkness. And the fashionably posing youth in Jamie Bradbury’s watercolours are copping so much ‘tude, I roll my eyes and move on."

Lonsdale Gallery ushers in a new wave of playfully experimental artists this summer with “Peep Show.” This media-diverse exhibition includes works by Jamie Bradbury, Bogdan Luca, Osheen Harruthoonyan, Amanda McCavour and Alex McLeod that share a spirit of creative inventiveness. Photo-based artist Osheen Harruthoonyan, for instance, poetically explores memory dissolution by altering found and personal photographs through unique analog printing processes, while Amanda McCavour specializes in intricate thread drawings that add warm tactility to an otherwise removed viewing experience. Bogdan Luca’s figurative practice weaves in “concepts of distortion, repetition, perspective and even complete disintegration of the form” to create paintings that tingle with colour, motion and feeling, vividly capturing subjective impressions of moments in time. Artist Alex McLeod was recently featured on "Unedit My Heart", the blog of Toronto Art Writer and Critic, Leah Sandals.

Sandals writes:

I first saw McLeod's work in a solo at Switch Contemporary earlier in June, and now it turns out the the guy has a two-person show opening at Queen West dealer Angell Gallery this Saturday, as well as a hand in an emerging-artist group show at Lonsdale Gallery opening next Wednesday.

So what is it, many young artists may be wondering, that makes McLeod's work "so different, so appealing"? (Or, in the very least, much exhibited.)

Peep Show is a preview of the next wave of Lonsdale Gallery programming. Showcasing cutting edge artists who work in a variety of media: painting, fiber, installation and digital media. Alongside these works, profiles on each artist will appear to give context to their present and future projects. Peep Show will be open for the 2009 Gallery Hop.

Jamie Bradbury is a painter who is redefining ideas of realism with his figurative watercolour paintings. His use of dense texture of watercolour paint in his compositions is not seen in many artists who use the medium. Jamie draws inspiration from street culture to give unique insights about his generation. In the fall of 2009 Jamie will be leaving for the UK to study
at the Central Saint Martins School as an MFA candidate.

Bogdan Luca is an oil painter who explores the boundaries of his media through ideas of the human form.Through his figurative practice Bodgan plays with concepts of distortion, repetition, perspective and even complete disintegration of the form. Currently, Bogdan is going into his final year for his MFA with the University of Toronto’s Visual Studies Program.

Osheen Harruthoonyan is a photo based artist who uses various analogue printing processes to layer, texture and work into both found and personal photographs to create ambiguous narratives which imbue feelings of nostalgia. In 2008, Osheen’s exhibition was chosen as one of the Globe & Mail’s “Top 5 Shows Not to Miss” for CONTACT Photography festival, and is currently being recognized by Bravo!’s “Arts & Minds” as a top young photographer to watch.

Amanda McCavour is a fibre artist who specializes in thread drawings. In Amanda’s works, thousands of threads are drawn together to define images such as figures and birds. Currently, Amanda holds a residency at the Harbourfront Centre’s fibre studio. Most recently, Amanda was given an award by the Ontario Craft Council for her fibre work. Later this year, Amanda’s work will be featured in the illustrious Cheongju International Biennale in South Korea.

Alex McLeod is an artist who is preoccupied with landscapes. His work is built in digital space, using computer software generally
used for film and advertising. In his digital worlds toy cabins and snowcapped mountains appear as if they could be leftovers from bizarre train sets. Through his new digital form of image making, Alex is pioneering a new form of fine arts. Alex has recently been included in the Magenta Foundation publication Carte Blanche 2.

Toronto is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. In a society of advanced communication, concepts of borders, both geographic and cultural are being redefined. What will this mean for the identity of artists in Toronto and abroad? Through this panel discussion our aim is to address ideas of identity, internationalism, communication and technology as it relates to art and culture by drawing upon the opinions of arts professionals: Gareth Bate, Ella Cooper and Jim Hake. The lecture will be moderated and led by Li Koo, Director of 918 Bathurst Culture, Arts, Media & Education Centre and Stanzie Tooth, Artist and Curator for Lonsdale Gallery.

Art 2009 is unique to Toronto as it is hosting Canadian artists along side international artists who have been connected to the fair through their national embassies. More than just another commercial art fair, Art 2009 was created in the hopes of bridging the gap between Canadian and international artists to create an expressive and affordable forum for them to exhibit together and share ideas.

"The Principles of Design" reception for grade 8 photography students from Forest Hill Public School

Every year, Londale Gallery donates an exhibition space on its second floor to local school groups to display their photography for the Contact Festival. Pleas join us to celebrate the remarkable achievements of these young artists. The principles of design are the elements of composition used in all art works. For the exhibit, each student chose a different element to portray in his or her photograph. Along with their photos brightly coloured collective group portraits of the student-artists are on display. This exhibition will run until May 10th.

Contact 918 in an initiative for the Contact Photography Festival by the new 918 Bathurst Culture, Arts, Media & Education Centre in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood.

Through Contact 918 the centre has created an online hub for photographers worldwide to upload photos. For the month of May these photos will be turned into a rotating video projection in the centre to be accompanied with various other photo related activities.

Randy and Stacey will be practicing the act of remembering in the gallery from noon to 3pm on April 15th. They will be recounting events past and making a record of that recollection. Stacey and Randy frequently collaborate together including a performance at the 2008 Toronto International Art Fair and one at 7*a11d International Festival of Performance Art.

Randy Gagne was born in Cambridge, ON in 1983; He received his Bachelor of Art degree from the Ontario College of Arts in 2007, majoring in drawing of painting. Randy is currently active in sound/performance art, writing and music, and just recently had his writing on sound art published in the academic journal "sense & society". Other recent exhibitions include the odB sound art festival in Finland, the 2008 7a11d International Performance Art Festival, and the 2008 Toronto International Art Festival. Randy continues to prolifically record, collaborate, and perform music in and around the Toronto area, and has a new album included in an international anthology of experimental music from the record label Bennifer Editions.

Isla Craig is a song crafter of smooth sailing melody and trance like meanderings. Inspiration comes to her in the form of afghan geometry, early vocal music and R &B listening/imitation, and an all encompassing habitation within a world wraught in textile wizardry and colour explosion.

Unity is both the internal and external focus as one seeks the truth about oneself, one's relationship to others and reality (both the world at large and the unseen realm). The mystic's motivation for such an arduous endeavor appears to be unique to the individual and culture, and sometimes a new religion, order or sect may be the legacy.

Isla collaborates regularly with the Muskox (www.myspace.com/muskoxmuskoxmuskoxmuskox) and the Element Choir (www.myspace.com/elementchoir).

RESPONSIVE SPACE
Responsive Space calls to question concepts of human connections to nature by creating new ways to approach environments. Artists Alex McLeod, Laura Paolini, Stacey Sproule and Stanzie Tooth use landscape as an entry point to create their work, employing symbols and metaphors from the natural world as signifiers of the sublime in nature as well as our human reactions and affects on landscapes.

ALL OVER AGAIN

Stacey Sproule incorporates herself as an active component to her installations. As part of Responsive Space, Sproule will create a complete living environment within the gallery space. Through this installation she will inhabit the gallery as a creature emerging from hibernation. Sproule will create a series of handmade objects using obscure or obsolete technologies. Knitting garments for spring, nourishing herself with homemade preserves, resetting clocks, napping and indexing memories, all as a preparation for re-entering the world. This piece is meant as a period not only of preparation but also of contemplation for what the next season will bring. Through this interior space, Sproule addresses the symbiotic relationship of our human life cycles to the cycles of nature. The use of obsolete technologies speaks to a time when we as animals were still intrinsically bound to the changing of the seasons, as opposed to our modern condition in which we use technology to combat them.

As an added component to her installation, Sproule has invited arts professionals and performers to sit with her on various days during her occupation of the gallery to collaborate on specific elements of her installation.

The gala performance of All Over Again will take place during the opening reception for Responsive Space : Thursday, April 2 from 6-9pm.

Responsive Space

In the Critique of Judgment, philosopher Immanuel Kant described the vastness of nature as one of the few physical examples that illustrates ideas of the infinite. He believed that the forces of nature were powerful enough to display that which was beyond human reason.

We feel the affects of the sublime in the stories and legends that shape our culture. In fairytales or Romantic writing, the landscape is used like a character to describe the emotion or psychology of the scene. Added to this is the tradition of landscape as artist's subject- attempts to capture the sublime through art.

Responsive Space calls to question these concepts by creating new ways to approach environments. Artists Alex McLeod, Laura Paolini, Stacey Sproule and Stanzie Tooth use landscape as an entry point to create their work, employing symbols and metaphors from the natural world as signifiers of the sublime in nature as well as our human reactions and affects on landscapes.

In an era where the human affects on the ecology of the planet are continually brought to question, we sometimes fail to stop and think about the majesty of nature. Responsive Space offers glimpses for new worlds beyond our everyday experience. Working in a variety of media, the common thread amongst these artists is an interest in the fragile connections shared between humans and nature. Like the stories from our childhoods, these artworks make sentiments about the sublime in our natural world. The morals of these pieces then, like fairytales, are dependent on our being drawn into the worlds they create.

Laura Paolini graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, holding a BFA with Distinction from the Sculpture/Installation Department in the Faculty of Art. Her theses on problematics in the history of art have appeared in arts based publications (both student and professional) and her artwork is succinct with the various responsibilities she holds professionally. Laura is the Intern and Projects Coordinator at Vtape, and she is the newest member on the Board of Governors for FADO Performance Art Inc. In Fall 2008, Laura joined the Media Lab at the Canadian Film Centre as an artist-in-residence. Produced with the support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council

Stanzie Tooth is a painter with an interest in landscapes and figuration. Stanzie graduated from OCAD in 2007 with a BFA in Drawing and Painting with an award of distinction for excellence in painting. Many of the narratives in her work have been shaped by her upbringing in rural Ontario and have been exhibited throughout Toronto. Most recently, her series, "Through the Woods" was featured at the Canadian Heritage Building.

An Imperfect Order - runs February 25-March 22, 2009- opening reception Sunday, March 1st from 1-4pm

The order society attempts to impose onto nature often proves to be imperfect. What people often perceive to be imperfection (chaos) in nature may in fact be a complex type of order.

Jim Reid and Peggy Taylor Reid often draw inspiration from the same rural Ontario landscape. Though they both draw inspiration from the same setting, their work is completely unique in style and concept. This exhibition shows the different interpretations of "ferals" by each artist.

Jim Reid's new work is an extension of his "Ferals" series, the subjects being feral orchards and primal forests. These paintings are done on-site in the landscape: large canvases are portaged to different locations throughout the year, and the paintings evolve through the extremes of the Canadian climate. Most paintings take many months to complete and through this process become densely layered and slowly transform as the landscape changes. The modernist ideal of "Truth to Materials" is extended so that the painting-process becomes a metaphor for the timeless natural cycles of growth and decay.

Peggy Taylor-Reid documents nature through photography. This work is a continuation of the artist's ongoing exploration which contemplates objects as traces and shadows of our physical world. Taylor-Reid seeks to place the experience of looking into the realm of personal experience where the act of seeing is a path to new knowledge and understanding of the complexity in the natural world. The work is designed as a critique of our over confidence of the cultural power of science and commerce. The installation and photographic recording methods are pseudo scientific with the aim of directing the viewer to a more poetic understanding.

Taylor Reid's "Feral Apples" are catalogued and photographed in a way that reflects the two most powerful forces in our culture: science and commerce, yet they steadfastly refuse to conform to either model. They are imperfect, un-uniform, remnants of heritage varieties most of which have been abandoned by commercial producers. The apples reveal the wondrous complexity, variability, and tenacity of the natural world and have the added dimension of culture interacting with nature.

Lonsdale Gallery closed for approximately two weeks over the holiday season. During this time, we wanted to leave on display a piece which would incite conversation about art. George Boileau's sculpture "A History of Discourse" certainly did that.

In response to the questions we have received since its installation: Yes- the gun is a real .44 calibre, cap and ball, black powder revolver for its historical reference. The revolver has been officially deactivated and approved by the R.C.M.P.

First Annual Park(ing) Day

Friday, September 19th, 2008 marked the first annual Park(ing) Day, sponsored and organized by Lonsdale Gallery. Though enjoyed by the neighbourhood, there was some controversy when an angry passer-by called the authorities.

The story of Park(ing) Day was captured by Toronto Star feature writer, Francie Kopun, in today's Saturday Star, (please see the scanned article below followed by our response.)

As a representative of Lonsdale Gallery, I wanted to respond to yesterday's stirring article by Francine Kopun about our participation in the international event "Park(ing) Day". As the article states, we setup a restful green space in a parking spot, outside of our gallery in Forest Hill Village.

The day was a pleasant one. This project brought people together: members of the community, school children and people from around the city, who's interests were sparked by this concept of temporarily reclaiming green space. Of the many people who enjoyed and participated in the event, it was one angry and determined individual who ultimately had our event closed down.

This was an unobtrusive event, a temporary and unexpected breath of fresh air in a crowded urban environment. Our space was no larger than a car's length, and participants were only occupying the one space given. Seemingly- our project was a small, positive message about community involvement and effecting change. Furthermore, we had consultations with both the Parking Enforcement and the Police at various points in the day, both of whom could find no valid reason that we could not occupy a parking spot with grass as opposed to a vehicle. However, we were still shut down by the Transit Authority later that day, after they decided that our event required a permit from the city.

While I agree that permits are important, one question remains: how much effect should one loud voice have over a contented mass? In a democratic society, where people are happy with the change you are bringing to a neighbourhood, should the complaint of one take precedent over the crowd?

From the great response we received from yesterday's event, we would love to proceed with Park(ing) Day for next year. So I put the question out to the city's public: should such proactive events be supported?

It is, in my opinion, an item that should be considered by the City of Toronto and its Parking Enforcement, Police and Transit Authority. And perhaps, those who protested yesterday may just need to take a minute to sit on an open patch of grass and reflect- "is it really so bad?"

National Park(ing) Day Returns September 19

TORONTO –Lonsdale Gallery launches Park(ing) Day in Toronto, creating a Canadian presence for this important event, which increases the number downtown parks in North America.

Friday, September 19, 2008 is National Park(ing) Day, and metered public parking spots nationwide will become temporary public parks. The project is sponsored by The Trust for Public Land (TPL), a national conservation nonprofit.

National Park(ing) Day is an annual event celebrating parks by creating temporary parks in public parking spaces. The goals, according to organizers, are to celebrate parks and promote the need for more parks in America’s cities.

In 2007, National Park(ing) Day spawned more than 200 new parks in more than fifty cities nationwide and around the world. See coverage from CNN.

"By turning parking spaces into instant parks, National Park(ing) Day is a creative way to demonstrate the real need to create more parks in our cities," said Will Rogers, TPL president.
